We want to be the best at understanding and responding to our community’s needs. To do this we need the very best candidates from a wide range of backgrounds to apply to become part of our policing family.

We have a strong commitment to equality and diversity both within the organisation and in the service we provide. Our aim is to attract, recruit, support and promote talented individuals who represent the diverse communities we serve across South Wales.

To value difference we must be inclusive: we recognise that people with a variety of skills, attitudes and experiences, from diverse backgrounds and cultures, bring fresh ideas and perspectives. Encouraging and harnessing these differences can only enhance South Wales Police and we are committed to achieving a workforce that is representative of the communities we serve. In delivering our policing service it is vital we gain the trust and confidence of all our communities and keenly promote diversity and inclusion for everyone.

We encourage individuals from under-represented groups and communities to engage with our recruitment and progression opportunities. As permitted within UK employment equality legislation, we are proud to pursue a policy of Positive action to help achieve this.

Positive action refers to a range of measures and initiatives that employers can lawfully take to actively encourage individuals from under-represented groups to apply.

Having true difference in our police family brings different perspectives and help us better understand our communities. In doing so, we can innovate and respond to the needs of our ever-changing society.

Our Positive Action team, made up of serving officers and police staff, are on hand to offer assistance to prospective candidates with protected characteristics. They can offer tailored, and sometimes one to one support, to guide you through the application process. They can assist you to overcome any barriers you may feel you face, whatever part of our police family you are thinking of joining.

As B.A.M.E. candidates are currently under represented within the Force, we particularly welcome applications, and the opportunity for informal discussion, with individuals from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds.

If you would like to speak with someone about forthcoming recruitment campaigns, opportunities and support available to you, please contact our representative workforce team at Joinus@south-wales.police.uk.

Please note: Our selection procedure itself is no different, and is based solely on merit. ‘Positive action’ does not seek to remove competition and South Wales Police will always take the best applicants.
